Ammonia measurements in Cabauw, Netherlands

Ammonia, NH3, is a reactive nitrogen related gas. Main emitions are due to

  • traffic
  • biomass burning
  • animal farming
  • agriculture, especially when manure is applied for fertilization

Satellite images Van Damme et.al. 2014 reveal three hot spots in Western Europe, which can be related to agriculture: the Ebro valley in Spain, the Po valley n Italy and Netherlands/Northwest Germany.

In 2023, a small mobile facility was operated in Cabauw, Netherlands as part of a campaign conducted by Dr. Enrico Dammers, TNO Netherlands to measure timely dens diurnal cycles of Ammonia.

The FRIT measurements reveal a prominent diurnal cycle in May and June.
